Putney Diary of Cllr Lister

Lister on Putney

Changes to services from Clapham Junction to Gatwick, the new cycle path in Putney, leaf & rubbish collections..........

How many local people I wonder are aware of a proposal which will affect Putney residents travelling to Gatwick who are used to changing at Clapham Junction? Bosses at the Strategic Rail Authority are consulting on plans to cut the number of fast services from Victoria to Brighton that stop at the station.

If they went ahead the changes would mean fewer (and slower) services from Clapham Junction to Gatwick with the only alternative being a costly and less convenient trek up to Victoria to catch the Gatwick Express. The council will resist any attempt to reduce the accessibility of Clapham Junction for local people.

Better news for commuters of the two-wheeled variety with the opening by the council of the new cycle route alongside the Thames in Wandsworth Park.

This stretch is already popular with cyclists escaping the perils of Putney Bridge Road as well as new residents of the splendid Riverside Quarter development at the eastern end of the park.
If you do try this safer route please have consideration for other park users and cycle carefully and slowly.

I am happy to reassure putneysw15.com correspondents that the council will be repeating its popular leaf collection service this autumn in Putney.
In those roads where the houses have trees in their front gardens or large trees on the street in front of their property, we shall be supplying sacks for residents which will be collected by the council's contractor.
We currently expect the service to start operating from November 1.

Finally a reminder that from next week all bins and refuse sacks should be placed at the front of the property for collection in the same way as the orange sacks are placed at present.
The change is designed to make collections swifter - and more thorough.
People who are elderly or disabled and may need help with moving their rubbish should call the council on 020 8871 8558.
