LISTER ON PUTNEY Edward Lister is the Leader of Wandsworth Council and a member for Putney's Thamesfield ward. It seems you can't walk down any high street these days without being assailed by a throng of garish posters advertising everything from golf club sales to pine furniture warehouses. All these posters are illegal. They are unsightly, bring added clutter to our busy streets and in many locations can cause a road safety hazard. Until now we have only been able to remove these posters from lamp columns, guard rails and traffic signals on our own roads - not on the major routes like Upper Richmond Road which are the responsibility of the Traffic Director for London. Now with the blessing of TfL we plan to crack down on these roads too. It means firms which allow their products to be promoted in this way are much more likely to be prosecuted and fined for what is little more than organised littering. Exciting news for young people in Roehampton with the announcement of plans for a juice bar in Danebury Avenue. The venue will be open in the evenings when other shops here are closed. It will be run by the Connexions service which offers employment and education advice to 16 to 19 year olds. With money coming from Connexions and the council's education department the premises - which were once occupied by a bank - will be transformed into a place where young people will feel comfortable about dropping in for a chat about their career choices. Next Wednesday sees the final act in the night flights campaign. Seventeen judges sitting in Strasbourg will rule on the UK Government's challenge to last year's judgment that night flights violated human rights. The Government's case is being led by the Attorney General no less. Wandsworth helped to raise £50,000 form councils in London and the South East towards the campaigners' legal costs. We even have the Mayor of London on our side! There are 16 night flights every day. They wake up people in Putney from about 4.30am. The Government's argument is that this small number of flights are vital to the UK economy. But they have never measured that value nor set it against the harm done to individuals' health through loss of sleep. If we win next Wednesday it won't be the end of night flights but it will force ministers to justify why they need to continue. 8th October 2002 anti-third runway meeting bonfires and planning aleert system.........Cllr Lister's Diary Busy October 2002..........Cllr Lister's Diary .
