Lister on Putney
Praise for the local police, anger at the threat of more closures to local Post Offices, HACAN and planning refusals.
It was good to see Borough Commander Martin Jauch highlighting the value of a partnership approach to the fight against crime.
We know that Wandsworth is still around 100 officers down on a few years ago and loses around 35 more under the formula used by Ken Livingstone's police authority to share out resources between boroughs.
That's
why the support given to the police by local councils and
neighbourhood watch
groups is so important.
Another
month, and another matter-of-fact announcement by the Post Office that more local
post offices are to close. In
Putney we've already lost branches in both the Lower and Upper Richmond
Roads,
Revelstoke Road and most recently in Tildesley Road. Now we learn that another
in Montfort Place, Southfields is to go along with four more in Tooting.
The closing date for the latest 'consultation' is June 21. The council will be announcing details shortly of a public meeting which we hope will leave post office bosses in no doubt about the opposition to their plans.
All the effort seems to be going in to paying postmasters to pack up and leave. If as much thought was given to financial packages that encouraged people to stay and diversify their businesses we might at last begin to reverse this seemingly unstoppable trend which is causing such damage to local shopping parades.
Good
to see HACAN beating the drum on the threat to runway alternation posed by the
Government's airports white paper. We've
learnt from bitter experience that in anything to do with airport planning the
devil is always in the detail - and the industry always ends up
getting it
way.
The change-over between north and south runways is the only respite we have in Putney from all-day noise. If the airlines can't get a third runway in the timescale they want they are sure to press for extra capacity in other ways.
HACAN's John Stewart will be sharing a platform with the council's chief executive Gerald Jones at the Putney Society's meeting on June 26. We will be bringing society members up to date with progress on our joint legal challenge to the white paper.
Finally I was relieved to see the plans for the former Dowell Lloyd auction rooms in Putney Bridge Road turned down by the planning committee. Councillors were right to take on board the concerns of local residents in Deodar Road and reject this over-development of the site.
Edward Lister is the Leader of Wandsworth Council and a member for Putney's Thamesfield ward.
