Lister on Putney
News on our neighbour Wandsworth Town Centre, the fight against noise pollution from aircraft and congratulations to the award winning Putney & Wandsworth Crime Prevention Panel....
Wandsworth town centre had an early taste of Olympic fever on Saturday when a team of top sportsmen and women carried the celebrated torch through the borough.
The cross-London relay started from the All England Club in Wimbledon and headed for the British Olympic Association's offices in Wandsworth Plain on its way across the capital. The event took place in the middle of Wimbledon Tennis fortnight which of course is bringing its usual weight of traffic onto our busy streets.
A long term strategy for removing much of the through traffic from the High Street will be top of the agenda for the newly formed Wandsworth Partnership Board. The group comprises local authority, business and community interests. It is a new body which will aim to build on the success of the Wandsworth Challenge Town Centre Partnership which bowed out in March after nine highly successful years.
Transport for London, who will be the key players in any new plans for the one-way system, were present at the first meeting and will, I am sure, be put under the spotlight by members in the months ahead.
The subject of aircraft noise from planes coming in to land at Heathrow has long been a hot topic among residents in the west of the borough. Increasingly these concerns are expressed by people in central Wandsworth - especially in the summer months when windows are left open and the noise nuisance becomes more intrusive.
The council has been campaigning for many years for greater protection for local people from the insatiable demand for growth at Heathrow. Later this year the council will be in the High Court bidding to overturn the Government's airports white paper which proposes a third runway by 2015.
But the danger is closer at hand because long before them ministers want to allow more aircraft to use the existing runways by ending the current practice of runway alternation. This would mean more landings overhead for longer periods throughout the day - and less respite from noise. Because none of this was foreshadowed in the consultation which led up to the white paper, the council believes the process has been unfair.
Our challenge is backed by other local councils and anti-noise campaigners HACAN. If we succeed the Government could be forced to run the whole process again - this time spelling out clearly the implications of allowing planes to land on both runways in parallel.
Finally, congratulation to the Putney and Wandsworth Crime Prevention Panel which won £2,375 at the recent borough crime prevention awards. The funds will be used to provide printed guidance notes for teachers on the Anti Social Behaviour project, and can also be used to purchase fireproof letterboxes for victims of domestic violence who may be at risk of arson attacks.
