LISTER ON PUTNEY
Edward Lister is the Leader of Wandsworth Council and a member for Putney's Thamesfield ward.
A warm welcome this week to the borough's newest school.St Cecilia's Wandsworth has been built by the council to meet the needs of those parents who want an Anglican education for their children at secondary level.
The new school
at Sutherland Grove is the result of many years hard work
resolving the planning issues, and securing the £12.4m funding needed
for the new buildings. It
will be especially popular with parents in Putney and Southfields whose
children attend the highly successful Church of England primaries in the
area.
More good news for local education opportunities has come with the council planning committee's decision to give the go ahead to the redevelopment of the Whitelands College site on West Hill. This will ensure that the new college buildings can go ahead at Parkstead House, Roehampton on the University of Surrey campus.
As part of the deal the college will have to ensure that its brand new playing fields and sports facilities are made available to the community at a reasonable cost.
A growing number of local people are expressing concerns about the fate of Putney Hospital.
The local Primary Care Trust has announced that three GPs and a pharmacy will be moving in to a new care centre on the site in 2006. But there have been no recent meetings with the council's planning officers which suggests that there is an awfully long way to go before a realistic proposal can be prepared. The building remains a boarded-up eyesore and a shocking waste of NHS resources.
Finally a
good news NHS story. The council's social services department which works
well with local health colleagues to reduce bed blocking, is to invest
a further £100,000 in an expanded service. The
money will go on additional occupational therapy and physiotherapy
as well as extra carers.
The aim is to make sure that all the key community services are lined up for when a patient leaves hospital and with health service support is expected to boost the numbers helped in this way to more than 600 in the current year.
