LISTER ON PUTNEY
Edward Lister is the Leader of Wandsworth Council and a member for Putney's Thamesfield ward.
Nine
out of ten people polled in a council survey earlier this year said
they liked living in Putney.Local
authorities use surveys a lot these days. Not just to find out if residents
think they are doing a good job - but also to make sure they are tackling
the issues that concern people most.
All these
polls have a common message: people are worried about crime
and vandalism. That's why we invest so much in CCTV cameras - like the
ones going up in Quill Lane - and why we keep up the pressure for more
bobbies on the beat - which has delivered results in Roehampton.
We've
also been working with the police and residents groups on tough new measures
to crack down on the yobs who plague so many neighbourhoods these days.
Anyone
who gets an anti social behaviour order from the court could have their
name and photograph plastered over leaflets that would be delivered door
to door in their area.
We're also stepping up preventive work by making sure all the different services we run for young people focus on those who are most at risk. The new targeted approach will combine inclusion schemes, support from educational advisers and traditional youth work into a single new integrated service.
Bringing the different elements of current services to young people together in this way will ensure that fewer 'at risk' teenagers slip through the net.
At the same time the council is opening new shop-front youth cafes which are being built around the high profile 'Base' model which is being developed in Roehampton's Danebury Avenue. Bases will provide an attractive and welcoming centre for young people where they can have a coffee, surf the net and tap into the full range of services available to them locally.
Finally it looks like it could be last orders at the Quill public house in Charlwood Road. The 1960s building here has always looked out of place in the conservation area and the design(left) of the new housing offers a reminder of how this corner of Putney must have looked 100 years ago when the original Quill tavern stood on the site.
While it's sad to see a pub go the current building is an eyesore(below) and I know from my postbag that many local residents will be looking forward to a quieter life in future.
