residents will again be paying the lowest council taxes in the country
after the council announced a tax freeze for the coming year.
The new Band D figure of £597 compares with over £1,300 for
a similar property just over the border in Richmond. In fact there are
now only four boroughs in London where the tax is below £1,000.This
year the council's share of the tax bill will be the same as last year
while the Mayor of London's charge will go up by 7.5 per cent.
Low taxes
are good news for everyone - but especially the elderly and those on fixed
incomes.
I
have to correct some of the comments made by Tony Colman MP about Downshire
House. The building in Roehampton Lane is set to become a new children's
centre aimed at providing a host of services for families with children
under five on the local estates.
South Thames College will occupy just under half of the space. They will focus on offering community and vocational courses which will be particularly relevant to local people. The Putney MP was wrong to say that the council acquired the building for nothing, wrong to say it was charging the college a full commercial rent and wrong to say it was 'disposing' of the rest of the building.
The college will pay a reasonable figure for their accommodation which will fall some way short of the 'commercial rent' quoted by Mr Colman and which reflects the college's own investment in improved access facilities.
The new children's centre at Downshire House is an exciting project which, like Putney School of Art, will I am sure prove a great asset for local people.
All the council ever wanted at Putney School of Art was for someone to run it properly so that it could realise its full potential as a local resource. Whatever your politics no one can deny that under the council's stewardship the revitalised art school has been a huge success.
