Care home deaths
My wife entered a care home in Brentford just over a year ago, suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Today we learnt that deaths from suspected or confirmed Covid-19 in care homes and hospices are higher than expected, and will now be counted in the daily total. This does not surprise me, but I want to make a different point.I last saw Annick on a Sunday several weeks ago. The prohibition on visits started the next day. Besides myself, our daughter and her husband were frequent visitors, but now the burden of comforting and caring falls exclusively on the excellent staff. I phone once a week for an update, the others do the same, and there have been worrying reports. Today we heard that she is not eating, and has been given fortified drinks to keep up her strength. I doubt that she is the only one of the residents to find this apparent neglect by loved ones incomprehensible. Annick barely communicates verbally, and has limited understanding of her circumstances. I worry that this may be the start of a more rapid decline, brought on by depression and despair which she cannot articulate. My point is that not all the deaths in care homes will be virus-related. The psychological effects of the isolation of care homes must, I think, boost the total of deaths and this will be an 'unintended consequence'.
