This money was to cover some of the costs of the redecoration of Johnson’s private flat above 11 Downing Street. The fine in itself is embarrassing but the bigger problem is that what the Commission’s eight month investigation found contradicts the account Johnson offered his own standards adviser Lord Geidt. The Prime Minister told Geidt he didn’t know until February 2021 who had covered the costs of the work. But the Commission today reported Johnson had sent a WhatsApp message to Tory donor Lord Brownlow about the money in November 2020. Labour’s Angela Rayner has asked the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards Kathryn Stone to investigate the matter again to see if Johnson broke the ministerial code and the rules on standards for MPs.
