I don't follow politics assiduously but if I was looking for a "dark horse" contender in any Tory leadership battle, it would probably be Jeremy Hunt simply because he has no associations with current bunch of Johnson selections and one of few high profile ministers remaining from Cameron/May eras.If it happens will be interesting to see how he handles examination of his prior Health and NHS roles given what happened subsequently!

Yes, Javid who asking with Osborne tried to stop the banks having to pay compensation to small businesses they miss sold to and then destroyed.And Sunak the Billionaire who's wife has offshore tax havens and who is against controlling tax havens. Javid is totally irresponsible and weak. If he had any balls he would be tackling Covid and putting us into lockdown rather than kowtowing to the right wing backbench morons.  Jeremy Hunt seems to be sensible and pragmatic but I suppose the majority of Tories don’t want a pragmatist leader!!

And now she's in charge of Brexit (re)negotiations what with running the Foreign Office not being a full-time job, as one Boris Johnson demonstrated in 2018. Somebody suggested on Twitter yesterday that the entire Cabinet will resign or be fired over the next few weeks and be replaced by Liz Truss.

I wouldn't bet on Javid becoming PM for one simple reason: baldness is a severe handicap for aspiring political leaders and Javid is as bald as they come. Not saying it's right.

Churchill may have had plenty of hair in 1940, but not much of it was on the top of his head.And while he wasn't subject to the scrutiny of TV like today's politicians, I doubt if there were many people in the country who didn't have a pretty good idea what he looked like.

I really don't know why we can't have Larry the Downing Street cat in charge - he'd probably be vastly better than anyone else currently in the government. Bunch of gutless, lying tossers.

Perhaps the Conservatives should think of the qualities they want in a leader? Honesty might be one for starters. Trustworthiness, the ability to understand complex issues quickly, loyalty, not in thrall to the Russians. Someone perhaps who models the behaviour that he/she expects from others, someone who pays for their own wallpaper and holidays etc etc.

The problem, as I see it, is that all the feasible candidates are so mired in the lies and corruption personified by the current PM that we’ll just get more of the same although possibly executed with more efficiency.  What both the Conservative party and the country needs right now is a clean break - someone who can heal division and root out corruption, someone who can be truthful about mistakes made and show real leadership and go some way towards uniting the country.  But I honestly can’t see Javid, Truss, Gove, Sunak managing that at all.

I was going to suggest that the tories, like labour, both suffer & benefit from containing a wide spectrum of political and social views (as Mr G points out). However I then remembered that the last couple of years have seen the tories swing far right and shed their moderates. So it is no longer true that the tories are a broad church. They are now a narrow (minded), libertarian, low tax, anti-state party. With little or no moderating voices.

Cox is hardly an appropriate candidate.  Apart from suspicions of conflict of interest with respect to his earnings from the Cayman Islands, it seems he only made one speech in Parliament over nine months, from February to November.
