I have a strong suspicion that the Boris detractors and europhiles on this forum will be venting their lexicon in full force shortly after 8.30 this evening, irrespective of the result of the Confidence vote.The purpose of this posting is to (hopefully) escape from the "Greasy pig" posting which has gone on for too long.For what its worth, the one thing I am certain about is that many people of all persuasions will never forgive the PM for keeping us locked in whilst his subordinates partied away under his stewardship.

Rubbish in Chiswick  - it's a disgrace

On our morning walk to, round and from Turnham Green the amount of rubbish dumped by individuals on Turnham Green was quite shocking and the plastic sacks of rubbish on CHR that has been there since Saturday shows how poor LBH's collection service is.Where's the community spirit and pride gone ?

Swimming aids ban at New Chiswick Pool

If you’re keen on sport or just love swimming to maintain your physical and mental health, you might have a view on this.Earlier this year, Lampton Leisure which runs New Chiswick Pool on behalf of Hounslow Borough Council without any consultation or notification to its monthly subscribers, started telling swimmers using 7cm rubber fins, hand paddles or centre-line snorkels that they had to take off them off as they were now banned.These items are used by (1) competent swimmers to focus on an aspect of their technique and (2) (in respect of fins and snorkel) senior citizens who struggle with crawl leg kick or have been recommended to use fins by their consultant following a hip op.Lampton Leisure is wholly owned by the Council and took over the pool fairly recently from Fusion Lifestyle.Despite being pressed to justify the decision, the management gave none other than to hint that it was for health and safety reasons but refused to give details of any accidents that might have occurred.After much campaigning by myself and others, the management has now conceded use of swimming aids should be allowed by the first category of swimmers – those who use the fast lane. Use is still banned by those who use the slow lane – predominantly the elderly and those with mobility issues. Again, no reason has been given as to why those who constitute the second group cannot be trusted to use short rubber fins and/or a snorkel (to save turning the neck constantly to breathe).I think this is unfair and shortsighted. The pace of the swimmers in the slow lane is predictably leisurely so I can see no risk to others whatsoever. I can only admire the senior citizens who take responsibility for their health and follow the advice of their medical professionals.This is a community pool after all and we are talking only of lane sessions where swimmers use designated lanes (not the general swim sessions).If you agree with me, please sign my petition to the Council to require Lamptons to remove the ban entirely so that both sportsmen/women AND senior citizens can fully enjoy the facility.Find the petition on the Council’s website: https://democraticservices.hounslow.gov.uk/mgEPetitionDisplay.aspx?id=75

technical question, iPhone

My wife's iPhone developed a fault. When she attempted to take a photo the image would disappear within a second, before she even had chance to frame it and press the button.  This continued for weeks and since she is a keen photographer she was forced to buy a newer version of her iPhone SE.  Now that oneis behaving in exactly the same way, which makes me think it must be the simcard at fault.  But how do you swap a simcard and retain the same number, contacts etc. and where can you buy a blank simcard?

Car chargers Mayfield avenue

Take note, out of the blue, no warning, my Bank account has been debited £15 each time I have connected. The average cost for me to charge is about £3.50. So, for about 15£ of charge they have taken £75  which they say they will return once the actual charge is paid. Needless to say I will not be using them again.

Interesting! https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jun/09/low-traffic-neighbourhoods-report-london-ltn-schemesTLDR: LTNs work, we should spend more money on them and we need lots more of themAlso anti-safer streets tropes busted about demographics that benefit, emergency vehicle delays etc. I am very sceptical that calling them something else is going to stop people vandalising bollards, pouring oil on planters, cutting road traffic counters, damaging private property or abusing people from anonymous accounts on social media. Councils need to anticipate, accept and manage the inevitable vitriolic reaction and persevere. And some useful guidance for local authorities especially this: 'be “discerning” about whether people who claimed to represent significant numbers of opponents genuinely did'. Hounslow got that memo, Ealing less so (although Mason may well have realised this but chose to prentend not to).

Garden waste in LBH part of Chiswick

No garden waste collection shown online either for tomorrow or a fortnight's time on the LBH page for my road.  Have emailed contact address at LBH but reply could take up to 10 days.  Have looked at the Bank Holiday page but no mention of a change to garden waste.  Have I missed anything that I should know about?

Betty wins street trading licence

Good to see that Betty has been given permission to put tables out in Barley Mow Passage in the evenings during the hours that the street is pedestrianised. Strangely they wanted to drive vehicles into a no vehicle zone. The car obsession of a noisy minority seems to have helped with the Panel granting the licence in this instance:"With regards to the tables and chairs being an obstruction for vehicles, this should not be an issue because no vehicles were allowed to use and/or access the road during the hours the Applicant would have tables and chairs on the road. During the hearing the Panel felt that much of the objectors’ concerns were in fact in relation to access to the road for vehicles."I'm sure Betty will become a popular spot for local cyclists now.
