Polio detected

Do we need to get vacinated? How long does a vacination last? Seems to be a big health issue. Does anyone know anything?

We always used to be told to be extra careful with washing our hands when changing babies' nappies after they had been given vaccinations because of the type of vaccine used.  Not that we shouldn't all be very careful anyway.  This has been found in sewage.  It is a shame that Govt has allowed raw sewage to be dumped in all our rivers and seas which are now polluted.

In 1955 I contracted Poliomyeltis and for over 3 years was in hospital and for much of that time in an Iron Lung. I recovered but with some physical but manageable after effects and went on to live a normal active life. However, I was warned that in later life I may suffer from ‘late effects of polio’ (LEoP) an umbrella term used to describe symptoms related to a history of poliomyelitis. Last year I was diagnosed with Post Polio Syndrome (PPS) which is a sub-category of LEoP.This has now severely affected my mobility  and walking for more than 3,000 steps a day is painful due to Neuro-Muscular damage from childhood Polio.Please get vaccinated, especially children. Polio is a horrible disease but is wholly preventable.

I believe Bill Gates Foundation has a dream to eradicate polio from the world so yes it is very preventable.

First, Lorraine, how terrible for you. The timings indicate that you would have been in the last years of being at risk of getting polio in the UK so very unlucky. Today we seem to have forgotten just how devastating this disease is, both when initially ill and throughout a victim's life. You have my sympathy.Second, Jayne, you are right but the Gates Foundation is up against ignorance and misinformation. This is evident in remote third world regions where there are claims that medical teams administering the vaccine are working for the CIA. So not so different from the ignorant anti-vaxxers here. The only way to eradicate polio is 100% (or close) vaccination. Anyone working against that should be ashamed.

Alan, many thanks for you thoughtful and kind words, but for over 60 of my 72 years, I've lived an active, normal and happy life so nothing to complain about. Since last year the treatment and support I received from my GP and all the NHS Hospitals (Guy's, West Middlesex and Roehampton) and Specialist Departments I'm under has been superb.My reason for posting is solely to encourage people to get vaccinated to protect themselves and others. Believe Polio is an awful debilitating disease, imagine waking up one day to find you couldn't walk or breath properly... please get vaccinated and make a difference  in stopping the spread of Poliomyeltis.

I read in the NY Times (I think Sky has the same story) some countries use oral vaccines which eliminate traces of the virus through feces and thus into the sewer system where it has been detected. So the traces found may, in part, be due to the vaccine used. Those used in the UK and US, for instance, are not processed by the body in the same way so, for whatever reason, no viral traces escape.

Funny how one mention of ignorance about vaccines and up pops our resident fool with his relentless hatred of the windows operating system. You can always tell a fool as they see philanthropy and shout "evil". Luckily they reserve such childish outbursts for the very wealthy givers. Otherwise they'd be declaiming that £20 you gave to Children in Need.I bet he sometimes stands outside the Brentford Carnegie library with a sign reading "these books will steal your mind, its all been financed by a billionaire so it must be true",

Sewage is routinely sampled for taces of all kinds of virii and drugs. It is one of the ways that drug use hotspots are identified.

Thank you for sharing your personal experience. My cousin also contracted poliomyelitis in the early 1950's and it certainly affected the quaility of, their sadly foreshortened, life. There has been a safe, readilly available vaccine as we know since the mid 1950's (too late for my cousin) and it is irrational to reject it.

Indeed it was. Remember being given it by the wonderful Dr. Mary Topham on Clitherow Avenue, Hanwell whose surgery and waiting room were two room in her own home, as was often the case way back then.

I remember the same, we had a yearly health check at school and I remember being given a sugar cube.But their are no records kept from the early 1950's so you cannot find out
