Litter pick-up

We in the Grove Park Group (GPG) have noticed an increased amount of litter by the Grove Park station and have decided to have another litter-picking session on Saturday 9th July. This time we will meet in front of the newsagent on Grove Park Road at 10am and afterwards you can have a coffee/tea at the café, compliments of the Grove Park Group, if you wish.Do feel free to join us. We will provide bags and litter-pickers, but please bring your own gardening gloves as it is often easier to pick up rubbish by hand.Should you wish to contact us about this please contact admin@groveparkgroup.co.uk

Would bigger bins in the area help any?

My daughter asked for and got extra bins in her area,as she was appalled at how much litter picking she had to do. It’s definitely made a difference, either bigger or more of them. I think there’s something wrong about picking up after other people, but it seems necessary

Your efforts are to be applauded.Once you've bagged up the litter... perhaps for the Council's collection... .wouldn't it be good to learn that the contents of the bags are carefully sorted (plastic/ tins/ cardboard/ paper and card/ glass), allocated accordingly... and not all dumped in landfill.Who can re-assure us?

On the subject of litter, will people please sweep up their garden mess when it falls into the pavement and not expect the council to do it, civic pride if we all did our bit the pavements would be much more pleasant for everyone.

We all know who doesn't because we have to walk through it.  It's funny how it so often seems to be the same properties.  We can offer to order a new net.  Offer a copy of Council instructions?  Ask Council to send information.

It’s real simple civic pride, we don’t need the council to tell us, if you are lucky to have a front garden clear up the mess that falls on the pavement. My husband waters the tree outside our house civic pride it’s easy think about others…..

When it comes to civic pride, Jayne, I often think of the older couple that used to live next door. Directly outside of their house was an abandoned tree well. They opted to plant it with flowers and cordoned it off with some bamboo and string. Maybe not the most robust solution for the pavement, but it was utterly charming and they tended to it like it was their own. Hounslow came along one day and replaced it with tarmac.Then LBH started planting and replanting trees. So I inquired about a new tree in the space in front of their home which they had subsequently moved from. Nothing doing. Some blather about it not being on their roster or only replanting existing wells. Mind you this is all within their very own green agenda. So they couldn't even restore a tree well because of red tape they created. Can't make it up.

Sadly bins often attract more than the odd bit of litter - they attract household waste.  You can be fined for putting your household or business waste inyo a litter bin.  CCTV often shows people taking bags of waste to dump beside bins - or even larger items.  Litter is no longer the odd sweetie papers.  Also sometimes business waste where businesses are avoiding paying for this which they are required to do.  Animals and birds will also remove packets and bags from litter bins to scavenge for food.  They can open sandwich packets and crisp packets.  Coffee cups can be found balanced on top of bins until they are knocked of/pushed off and roll and blow around.  Squashing them reduces the volume and creates more space in the bin and stops them from rolling.  The same for cans.Cans are valuable recycling but waste from litter bins is generally incinerated as it is so mixed and that has high gate fees and produces CO2.  Recycle what you can!  Scotland which is ahead of the UK delayed the rollout of their Deposit Return System (DRS) for drinks containers because of Covid.https://www.mrw.co.uk/news/scotlands-deposit-return-scheme-to-go-live-in-2023-16-12-2021/.

Commuters should be encouraged to take their newspapers (and inserts) home to recycle.Residents have in the past been fined when addressed correspondence has been found in street litter bins - your home or office is the place to dispose of those. It will be interesting what you find!

I was heartened to read in yesterday's Metro newspaper about "litter pickers at the Glastonbury Festival.. and the fact that they "do the job properly"!The Metro reported on the activities of the 1300 strong army of volunteers. They are given three bags each (one for general waste, one for compostable bits and a third for recyclable items which are subsequently properly sorted).Note: not all bundled in one bag unsorted and handed over to the Council!Glastonbury litter pickers.. at the previous event..collected 68 tonnes of paper and card, 38 tonnes of glass, 57 tonnes! of cans and 17 tonnes of plastic bottles.Oh to hear from someone that Chiswick,Brentford and Heston litter pickershave their collections sorted by someone..caring.Well done Glastonbury..they have set an example perhaps.

Litter pickers in chiswick, really so what we are saying it’s OK to go to a park and leave your litter???? Expecting good citizens to volunteer to pick up others litter. I say shame on anyone who thinks it’s OK to enjoy a park, walk away leaving their litter. Surely the answer is simple do NOT leave your litter, it goes back to civic pride. Parks are for everyone to enjoy including young children, dogs and wildlife. Is it acceptable for any other able bodied group to leave their litter in a park or any public place? Glastonbury I get…chiswick, Brentford or any other area I don’t……

I got a litter picker and bought the hoop to keep the bag open. After a couple of outings, I thought , what am I doing picking up other peoples rubbish !

Well I think it is a good community spirited thing to do and I've done it myself.  However I would also like to see more information and education about reducing waste and taking and putting your recyclable waste in your recycling at home or at work so that it doesn't add to the CO2 in the atmosphere and cost the Councils (and therefore Council Tax paying residents) even more money.
