Liz Truss

Who knew? She has suddenly demonstrated sense (limited but moving towards sense). What a surprise (not) that border and customs challenges are imminent. Might this imply that Johnson and Gove were lying? Surely not!!

Abandoned boat - The River Rat

This evening my attention was drawn to a small blue-hulled outboard motor boat called The River Rat.  It had been inexpertly tied to a lighting bollard on the Thames Path at Chiswick Quay, and as the tide was falling the ropes were coming under strain.  Either the cleats, the bollard, or the ropes would have failed as the river fell further.I have taken the boat into the marina for safety.  If you are aware who the owner is, please ask him or her to ring 020 8994 8743 after 09:00 tomorrow. I have of course emailed Chiswick Riverside police.Thank you.John ForbesHarbour MasterChiswick Quay Marina020 8994 8743harbourmaster@chiswickquay.com

BBC licence for the over 75’s

I have not reached this age yet but I wonder whether this is a wise decision by the BBC at this time.  The elderly really do rely on tv during the pandemic - they have been stuck indoors for months and tv has been their lifeline. Often not seeing any one for this time- Just interested how you think about this. I think it is a bad decision at this time.

Covid 19 Vacine

I saw the USA representitive to the EU this morning on TV. He was asked about America buying up the world supply of a drug used for treating Covid 19. He said that was so but production was increased so the EU will have some. On the vacine he said the USA was in talks with the EU so that it would be shared fairly. Nothing about the UK. Now we learn that we have not joined the EU scheme to purchase any future vacine. It does not look good bearing in mind the PPE situation this government got us into.

Chiswick's New Virtual ABC Cafe.

Following the stunning range of interest that my last "ABC Cafe" thread attracted there have been several calls for a new thread to be established so that the dicussion on Chiswick's history can continue without having to scroll past 500+ messages. So, at long last, here it is: our brand new Chiswick ABC Cafe in cyberspace!  Here we can exchange memories, research, local legends and ancient photographs.  Above all we can examine the history of our home community in greater depth.  On the old ABC thread we still had a number of matters outstanding.  We had just started discussions on Chiswick in Swinging Sixties, famous Chiswick murders and ghosts and, of course, we were still exchanging fantastic images of Chiswick in the war years.  So come on folks, enter the new ABC Cafe, pull up a chair, order a cup of tea and a coconut cheesecake and let the discussion flow!

Think this is a scam

Message supposed to be from Amazon to my partner, offering gift box to the person making certain number of hits on the site, one gift was an iPhone, they then ask himto pay £1 to be included we think to get his bank details so he just deleted the message. I have never receive such a message and think that is because I prefer to pay through PayPal so they would not get my details even if they ask me.  Has anyone else had this message.

Sainsbury's Recycling Bins

Does anybody know the day they are emptied? I've been down a couple of times and they have been full to bursting meaning I haven't been able to leave anything.

John Lewis @ Westfield, Shepherds Bush

Ref the headline on this site from a couple of days ago would John Lewis realistically pull out of this centre after just 2 years? With Debenham's gone and House of Fraser on the way out there would be no department store anchor tenant - unless you count M&S.

Married Women Missing Out On Pension

This has to be actually applied for and claimed rather than just being added to the amount you are getting.  It was discovered that this was happening by a former Minister of Pensions.  So check if it is you, your mother or Grandmother.https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p08ffc7x

Re TfLs response to using herbicides.

Ethylene Glycol is not a herbicide. It is used for de-icing. It is produced from carbon monoxide in countries with large coal reserves and less stringent environmental regulations such as Inner Mongolia, China and India. There have been more environmentally friendly alternatives in use for many years including calcium chloride ( CaC12 )“ We only apply herbicide to vegetation where there is no alternative.”The herbicide most generally used is Glyphosate ( Roundup ) which is highly toxic and very bad for the environment and biodiversity. There are reports that is it is also carcinogenic and the E.U. are investigating this. It is good to see that LBH will no longer be using it on our parks, greens and pavements. Again there are better alternatives such as multivo.co.uk using hot water which also deals with knotweed.Since the chemicals that are being used also leak into the groundwater across the whole network it is perhaps time for TfL to consider the impact of what they are using.
