Chiswick " has gone to the dogs"

"Chiswick has gone to the dogs" is how an acquaintance from Putney described our patch when I met her at the Dukes Meadows Market on Sunday.Run down and neglected,unkempt streets with mature weeds everywhere you look was her summation.She wasn't wrong.Step into Hammersmith and it's a different world. H&F had the foresight to heavily invest in chemical free weed control equipment.Contrast that with Hounslow who have a wholly inadequate approach consisting of an small team of workers with hoes!I have been in direct touch with the folk responsible and my local councillor but have had nothing but unfilled assurances that action will be taken.If your road is overrun by weeds the may I urge you to complain to your local councillor and report it to Fix My Street.By the way I am reliably informed that Hounslow are looking to find a contractor that can do the job for less than is paid now. How about looking for a contractor that can do the job properly would be my suggestion.

Petition against relocation of Herbarium at queue

The existing building where specimens are kept is to be relocated under plans by the Trustees of Kew. It is to be moved to a new building in Reading. Staff including scientists working at the Herbarium are against the plan. The review of "About Bill" (Theatre at the Tabard)

I was very pleased to read the lovely review by Susan Stanley-Carroll of "About Bill", playing at Theatre at the Tabard until the end of next week. I totally agree with all that Ms Stanley-Carroll says, having seen the show on Friday. It's beautifully written piece by Matthew Strachan and Bernie Gaughan, effectively staged by Keith Strachan and accompanied by Paul Crew. Kim Ismay's versatile tour de force performance is utterly outstanding and really should be seen. However, it should be noted that the late Matthew Strachan is Keith Strachan's son, rather than brother. A fantastic evening's theatre, which finishes in good time for a post theatre drink or meal. I cannot urge you enough to see it!

PCN advice please!

My neighbour just  WhatsApped me last night to say “hi Nick this was posted through my door  and we have been away for 2 months” (they are portugese).  It’s a PCN dated from July. Then this morning I get a letter from Hounslow saying I have missed my cut off date for paying the PCN and it’s now at £195!!! What do I do? There doesn’t seem to be any means of emailing or calling and they say “pay the £195 or debt collectors will be involved”Any way I can challenge all this? The postman posted the original to  number 16 and not number 18!!! Thanks all

Creative Woodwork Closeing down

I started this joinery business in Chiswick 18 years ago and it has been great but I have decided to shut it down and move on to something else. If you would like some free hardwood, sheet material (mdf, veneers etc) I will be available at our premises this week and you are welcome to come and help yourself. There is also a showroom with display wardrobes and an office with desks computer monitors. All must be cleared by the end of the week

Dog sitter over Xmas

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we are having to travel overseas for Christmas. We have never left our lovely Labrador to anyone other than family and are hoping that there is a dog lover willing to have him in their house for three nights (24-27 December). About Bill - Chiswick Playhouse

West End star Kim Ismay is bringing her one woman show to Chiswick. I've seen her as Tanya in Mamma Mia and Madame Morrible in Wicked as well as in cabaret at the Hippodrome. I'm already taking 9 guests and I know people travelling from all over to see this. If you're at a loose end I'm sure it will be a good evening.

Acton Bus Lane Removal - good idea, never gonna happen

My hot take on the latest round of proposals from Hounslow Council is that there are some good intentions here but I can't see them ever been implemented.It is encouraging them to see them taking on board the issues that residents have experienced around Wellesley Road have experienced due to the Acton Land bus gate but I'd be very surprised to see TfL stumping up the cash needed for the changes given that it delivers very little net benefit to them. There are a couple of nasties lurking in these new proposals as well including the loss of all the zebras on the High Road. I can see the argument for signalised crossings but ultimately this is a loss of pedestrian priority.

Fortress Chiswick

According to the Daily Mail we are in the grip of a 'terrifying crime wave'. While I don't doubt for one second everything that local shopowners who were interviewed for this article are saying, this is not a crime wave. Shoplifting and smash and grab raids have been going on in this area for years and years and so, while this problem may have been getting steadily worse, it is nothing new. It just seems to have attracted the Mail's attention because a celebrity unwisely wore a very expensive watch when in the area but robberies occur like this almost every day in places like Kensington and Chelsea and nobody describes them as fortresses. Shoplifting and shop windows broken for robberies are happening all the time in every town centre in London and many across the country.We aren't likely to ever get more police patrols along the High Road as there simply aren't the resources and the police themselves don't seem to believe this is effective. The solution to stop the problem getting even worse must be technology that is readily available. If someone stops in a car for 30 seconds to drop off a person on Turnham Green Terrace they get a fine. Yet people steal from shops on the same road with impunity. We already have accepted being the most surveiled city in the world so why shouldn't we start to get some benefit from all the cameras watching us with them being used to deal with crime rather than road traffic enfringements.
