Aldi Chiswick

I'm hoping it isn't marketing hyperbole, and that we're one step closer to getting our very own Aldi. It would certainly lessen the pain associated with a visit to our held-together-with-gaffer-tape Sainsbury's. Thames pollution

My grandfather used to work for the Water Board as it used to be called. He used to have to wear waist high waders and to dig up pavements and roads using brute force and the use of a sledgehammer (pneumatic drills had never even been dreamed in the former days.It was only in 1989 that water boards were privatised but unbeknown to most people, some of the biggest investors were the Chinese and other foreign companies. As many of you may already know that Thames Water boss refuses to rule out bill increases of up to 40% to secure the Company’s future. In the meantime if you live in the surrounding areas close to Mogden sewerage works my sympathy goes out to you.

Costs to residents of the proposed Glebe conservation area

The residents of the Glebe Estate currently have Permitted Development rights, which mean we can alter and improve our homes without planning permission and in the way we choose. Hounslow council want to take away our Permitted Development rights and instead make us pay more for improvements to the exterior of our homes. Michael Gove wants to give homeowners the right to use all their loft space and build wrap around rear extensions, yet Hounslow Council want to take our rights away. Last time a consultation was held there was considerable opposition and 82 people signed a petition against the Glebe Estate becoming a conservation area but Hounslow have ignored us again. In addition to the fees Hounslow Planning will restrict what you can do:-1) replacing / upgrading doors and windows Hounslow want expensive conservation grade timber windows2) changing the colour of a painted house (this may be refused)3) removing, building or improving front walls and fences Hounslow Council wants metal railings4) changing / increasing garden paving and tiled front paths5) bins stores and bicycle sheds  6) the enlargement, improvement or alteration of your houseHounslow want to stop infilling side returnsHounslow is unlikely to let you use all the space in your loft as recently proposed by Mr Gove7) Infilling a porch8) solar panels9) changing roofing materialnatural slate is a lot more expensive than alternativesAll but the smallest trees (stem size less than 75mm (3”) and 1.5m (4.9ft.) tall) will require 6 weeks notice to the council for approval of pruning. In a cost of living crisis Hounslow Council do not considered the planning fees and additional architectural and material costs “a deterrent or impediment to home expansion or improvement.”The House of Commons Library says:“Constituents living in conservation areas and listed buildings may discover that it can be difficult to obtain planning permission for common domestic projects such as energy efficiency improvements.”Building work will cost you more money and time as architects and builders will justify their higher fees / costs because of the additional bureaucracy. Hounslow council will ask for planning drawings, heritage statements, fire risk assessments (even for replacement windows) and in some cases material samples for the most basic of things like changing fences and windows, or re-roofing. None of this was explained in the Hounslow Council leaflet.

Also many with families split, many taxpaying EU citizens who had even made families in UK but now suffering.... there were many sad tales.

I don't know whether the length of queue is because others have had a similar message or that is LBH's usual delay, but other than trudging round to Fortress Lampton I don't know how else I am supposed to contact them immediately.

Ceramic Hobs!

This is a very Chiswick question…. Has anyone replaced their gas hob with a plug in ceramic one? Apparently if you get one with a 13 amp plug it restricts the power so you can’t have the burners on at the same time. That makes sense but surely it’s very restrictive? The alternative is to hard wire so there’s  no restriction (like the oven) but we don’t want one bad enough to go through that much expense and upheaval. Has anyone done it?

Good to see this place back, and obviously a small price change in this day age was inevitable, but £10 for a breakfast and £3.20 for a coffee is now inline with the high street and far away from what it used to be. Has anyone tried? Have they ignored their strong customer base for profit?

Chiswick School sporting success

Congratulations to all the Chiswick School students involved in the Middlesex FA soccer tournament.As well as their magnificent performance, it is great to see competitive sports between schools making a comeback. It provided benefits to schools way beyond the sporting aspect and it was sad to see it go into such a decline in the state sector. Hopefully this renaissance will be sustained.

Electronic Item - Consumer Advice

Interested if anyone can provide insight into the following.I recently attempted to return a faulty music unit which DPD have contrived to 'lose' Technically I wasn't eligible for a refund, but as the retailer have said they will issue a replacement (which I'm not keen on as I've lost faith with the brand / unit I returned) surely any new kit doesn't count as continuation of the terms of the original transaction and a refund could be issued?I'd rather be able to reinvest in alternate equipment. Thanks

Plumber for boiler repair

Not a good start to the week to wake up to no hot water or heating.My regular (of many years) plumber has just responded to say he is not currently working.Can anyone recommend a pleasant reliable plumber to came and fix the problem.
