MP for Putney's Diary Happy Easter to all Putney constituents!

Tony Colman MP for Putney writes

Happy Easter to all Putney constituents!

This is a special time not only for Christians, but also for all those who welcome the new life of Spring.

In the light of such good weather, may I recommend becoming an allotment holder. As President of the Roehampton Garden Society I am very proud to report on the excellent home produce grown on the allotments of Putney. Furthermore, should you want to enter your fruit and vegetables from your own gardens, there are two shows per year, both held at St. Margaret's Church Hall

School's admissions for 11 year olds

The last 4 months have been a nerve-wracking time for parents of rising 11 year-olds looking for places in the borough's Secondary schools. This was also the case in the Colman household.

Wandsworth Council's daft system of instructing parents to make separate applications to each school must come to an end. Where some children might receive more than one place, others are resigned to waiting lists and unnecessary worries

At least the Council has agreed that children will in future, receive no more than one offer from the Borough's schools. This has always been the case in Merton.

Extra £100 for the over 80s

As a result of the chancellor's Budget, the 3000 Putney constituents aged 80 plus will be entitled to an extra £100 off their heating bills, in addition to the £200 already offered. £300 extra for Putney's most senior residents.

Smoking (Restaurants) Bill

I have noticed the debate continues over smoking in restaurants on the SW15.com Forum. Here at the Commons, my colleague Gareth Thomas MP has passed his bill onto the second reading stage. His final comments in the House were as follows,

"A ban on smoking will not harm restaurant and café owners' incomes; it may even increase their sales and reduce their costs. This is surely a sensible public health measure to protect the health of British workers and the public more generally. It has already been road-tested for us by a number of other countries. I commend this Bill to the House."

I would suggest to those people who support this bill, as I do, not only to contact this office but also to encourage their friends from other constituencies to contact their MPs to increase the chances of this becoming law.

On these and any other issues I am always keen to hear the views of Putney constituents. Please feel free to contact me via www.tonycolman.org.uk or by writing to me at the House of Commons.
