PUTNEY'S MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT TONY COLMAN

One of the joys of being an MP is the contact it brings with the voluntary groups and charities which do so much to enrich the lives of individuals in our community. I was very pleased to attend on Friday March 1st the launch of Age Concern's new office at 4 Arndale Walk in the Wandsworth Shopping Centre.

This charity does quite outstanding work for our elderly citizens and it was a real privilege to be there

This charity does quite outstanding work for our elderly citizens
and it was a real privilege to be there.

This leads me naturally to Putney's voluntary group, PROP (Putney and Roehampton Organisation of Pensioners), who meet regularly at Lady North Hall in Ravenna Road in Putney. This is primarily a campaigning group which fights doggedly for improvements in pensioners' lives locally and nationally. I was very glad at one point to be able to arrange for the former Chair of PROP, Laurie Green, to join a delegation of pensioners' leaders to No. 10 Downing Street. I am told that Laurie grilled the Prime Minister as firmly and courteously as he and other PROP members grill me
when I attend their meetings. It was PROP too, under their current Chair Len Holmes, that organised at very short notice the stormy consultation meeting with Consignia that preceded the franchising of Putney Crown Post Office.

The third group I would like to pay tribute to is the Putney Society, which must be one of the most active amenity societies in the country. This group also meets regularly in the Lady North Hall and, quite rightly, gives me at least as hard a time as PROP at their meetings. If you have a strong interest in planning matters, the built environment, conservation of buildings and green spaces, the local health economy or any other matter, such as aircraft noise, that affects the quality of life locally, join the Putney Society.
