Tony Colman MP for Putney writes
War in Iraq, the Arndale Centre and a bill to ban smoking in restaurants
Iraq - update
As part of the effort to ensure that humanitarian aid and reconstruction of Iraq goes ahead under the auspices of the United Nations, I spent most of last week with the International Development Committee in the U.S.A., meeting with members of Congress and Representatives of the State Department in Washington DC and United Nations officials in New York. Amongst others I met with Louise Frechette, deputy to Kofi Annan and Sir Jeremy Greenstock, British Ambassador at the U.N.. The Committee formally wrote to Tony Blair and released our findings to the press (full details are available on my website www.tonycolman.org.uk).
Arndale Development
Building work still continues on the Arndale site, with contractors continuing late into the night and during weekends. Clearly the council has failed to properly control contractors under environmental health regulations on this site and local residents are once again the victims of Wandsworth's failures to impose restrictions. All planning applications, including the Parkstead / Whitelands site in Roehampton, must have a legal restriction on noise and time of work please Councillor Govindia.
Banning of smoking in restaurants
I am offering my support to a private member's bill on this issue. You may know that New York has imposed this ban last Saturday, to widespread support from both waiting staff and customers. My parents both suffered from addiction to smoking and certainly my lungs suffered as a consequence of passive smoking. I am concerned that those who chose not to smoke for their own personal health reasons should be able to enjoy an evening out, especially in Putney. I look forward to a lively debate on this question.
On these and any other issues I am always keen to hear the views of Putney constituents. Please feel free to contact me via www.tonycolman.org.uk or by writing to me at the House of Commons.
