highlights of working from home

Happy Friday everyone and thought I might start on a positive note this morning. After my first full week working from home I would say it has had its challenges but on the whole it has been positive. Mrs S-J and I have enjoyed our daily walk  sans telephones in the beautiful sunshine, strictly observing social distancing, appreciating the spring bloom smells and not talking about that Mexican beer!! I get an extra hour in bed everyday and have been in the back garden playing ping pong with the youngest at 5pm. If we take the positives, this isolation thing is actually a positive thing for families to reconnect, anyway, that's how we are are looking at it and so far so good. Keep safe everyone and be nice to one another but more importantly be positive.

Are Fruit and veg markets hiking up prices on Chiswick high road?

I notice some of the fruit and veg markets have stopped pricing their goods and one stall tried to sell me a cauliflower for £4 on Saturday afternoon. Ok so we’re lucky to have an alternative to entering a small supermarket but this feels like opportunistic profiteering to me!  We’re being told there’s no shortage of food and with restaurants, hotels, cafes closed there must be enough provisions available at the moment. The stall holders keep rubbing their hands with glee, saying how busy they are and only accepting cash.  Feels like exploitation when we’re worried about our health and so many people losing their jobs!

Thank you to all the local food stores

I’ve been so relieved to find all the fresh food shops on Turnham Green Terrace staying open. I wanted to say a huge thank you for keeping us going.It’s tough on your staff, but I wanted to let you know we appreciate all your efforts.  Mackens, Covent Garden Fishmonger, Lemons and Limes, Natoora, Source, Bayley and Sage. I’m sure I’ve missed some.  Thank you all

Poor puss.

Article in the 'i' today that there are reports that a cat in Belgium has contracted Covid-19 from its owner. The puss is recovering and they think it is an isolated case. Two dogs reported as having it in Hong Kong but no symptoms. Transfer was from human TO animal and the risk considered small. Advice is that if you have Covid-19 yourself your pet should be kept outside, there is absolutely no need to abandon pets.Only hope we all stay alright as I don't know who would break the news to the Princess we all serve that she will have to leave her sofa, she would be very, very peeved I can tell you!

Sir Peter Blake : London Stands Together

He has created a special rainbow for the Evening Standard as “ as a symbol of hope” for Londoners during the coronovirus pandemic. The picture bears the slogan “ London stands together”, a tribute to the capitals sense of solidarity at a time when we kept apart physically.It can be downloaded and printed to put in our windows.The 87 year old has been self isolating for more than a week.He was not paid for the image but has asked for the Standard to make a donation in his name to the Graeae Theatre Company which works with deaf and disabled actors.standard.co.uk

RIP Andy Pease

I have just heard from my brother–in-law, that Andy Pease has died. He was taken into hospital on Jan 10th after collapsing, and was in an induced coma for 66 days, after which he succumbed to pneumonia.

Keeping Fit

Does anyone have a rowing machine that they wish to sell or rent out for the duration of self-isolation? Also looking for dumb-bell weights. Trying to stay fit. Thanks everyone.

Rubbish and garden waste collections

Don’t clear out your houses or do mass garden clearances. All recycling centres closed. our waste collection services are feeling the strain now that families are at home and generating more waste. Councils outside London are cancelling all garden waste collections until situation resolves.  Recycle more than ever.

Public banned from Chiswick Business Park

Doing our regular walking circuit this afternoon, there was a security guard stopping members of the public walking through the landscaped Business Park. So despite most of the people employed there working from home, the owners had still decided to stop 'outsiders' infecting 'their' open space. For of course it is 'their space' as it's all actually private land, though it would be interesting to know what the original planning agreement said about maintaining public access. This privatisation of public spaces is an increasing problem, as shopping malls replace High Roads and new housing developments replace public streets.

Dead Fox

A dead fox in good condition has been spotted in the Corney Reach Estate next to Pissarro’s & another one on Acton Green near Turnham Green tube. Pet owners please be aware & take great care, as this could be as a the result of poisoning!

Is a Part of Dukes Closed?

Just been advised by a neighbour that a part of Dukes Meadows has been boarded off due to the amount of visitors crowding to the area through out the week.I cant go out to look, but interested in what part is closed.

Top Hat Cleaners

Fines for flouting Coronavirus rules

In Spain hefty fines are being issued to people not obeying lockdown rules Useful on many levelsA. Ensuring more people stay at homeB. Preventing spreadC. Recouping money for the government. Although as no one is obliged to carry ID in this country not sure how it would be feasible.

Are Takeaway Food Outlets at risk of spreading Coronavirus ?

Gregg's, Pizza Express, Costa, Starbucks, Byron's, Zizzi any many more have taken the laudable position of shutting down and not even offering just Takeaway but many others haven't. Random people and the likes of Deliveroo, Uber Eats, Just Eat couriers go into takeaway outlets and then deliver to customers, how safe is this and what is the likelihood of Coronavirus being transferred ? Just interested in your views.Best wishes and hope everyone stays healthy and safe.

Into battle

There's a really interesting article in this week's Spectator (you can download to Kindle). It's by a hospital doctor talking about how the NHS has leapt into action. He says that changes that would normally take months or even years of meetings and memos are being done in days as all the red tape is cut through, vastly increasing the NHS's ability to cope with this pandemic.He's impressed. So am I.We can do this.
