All Saints’ Church will host a richly intimate evening of Baroque music on Wednesday 14 October, when flautist Nicola Woodward performs Telemann’s 12 Fantasies at 7.45pm.

The collection, written for solo flute, is one of the great demonstrations of the instrument’s expressive range in the eighteenth century — technically daring, emotionally searching and full of the cosmopolitan flair that made Telemann one of the most admired composers of his age.

During his lifetime Telemann was regarded as an equal to Bach and Handel, a prolific and inventive figure whose music travelled widely across Europe. He survived personal tragedy, championed composers’ rights, and experimented with new printing techniques that helped shape the modern musical world. The Fantasies reflect that breadth of imagination: they draw on French elegance, Italian lyricism, German polyphony and even orchestral textures, all conjured from a single baroque flute. The result is music that feels both rooted in its time and strikingly forward‑looking.

Nicola Woodward brings formidable experience to the programme. A graduate of the Royal College of Music, she has performed at the Wigmore Hall, appeared live on Classic FM, worked with the Bournemouth and London Philharmonic Orchestras, and toured internationally for the British Council. She has also been a regular performer for King Charles at Buckingham Palace and Highgrove. Her recent recording of Koechlin’s Chants de Nectaire was named Guardian CD of the Week, confirming her reputation as a musician of exceptional sensitivity and skill.

Tickets, priced at £15, will be available on the door. There is no bar at the church, but the pub around the corner offers a welcoming spot to continue the conversation after the concert. This promises to be an evening of beautiful, intricate and quietly astonishing music — a chance to hear Telemann’s Fantasies brought vividly to life by one of the country’s most accomplished flautists.
