All Saints’ Church will begin its formal fundraising campaign for a new organ with an event this weekend.

The launch on Saturday 6 September at 6pm will include live music, presentations about the project, and an opportunity for visitors to see design proposals. Some of the surviving pipes from the old instrument will also be on display. The evening is free of charge and open to the public, with wine provided.

The appeal follows the loss of the church’s previous digital organ, which had reached the end of its working life. Church leaders have described the new project as a chance to create an instrument suited to the building and capable of inspiring future generations.

All Saints’ has a long history of music-making, with the organ at the heart of worship and community events. Earlier instruments at the church reflected the changing technology of their time, beginning with a traditional pipe organ that was installed in the early years of the parish. Like many churches, All Saints’ later adopted electronic and digital models to reduce costs and accommodate repairs, though these have not always provided the same durability or tonal richness as a pipe organ.

The decision to embark on this new project marks a return to a more ambitious approach, with plans to combine elements of historic craftsmanship—such as salvaged pipes from the old organ—with modern design. Organ building has long been regarded as one of the most complex and enduring traditions in church music, with well-constructed instruments often serving congregations for over a century.

All Saint’s Church is by Putney Common (SW15 1HL).
