New bus bids for Balham and Roehampton

as Council steps up campaign for better public transport

Top of the list is a new service from Tooting Bec to Fulham Broadway. This would also include stops on Trinity Road and at Wandsworth Bridge.  The council also wants new routes to link Balham to Wandsworth and from the Danebury Avenue area of Roehampton to Barnes Station .

The riverside developments should also have better connections to the main rail stations at Clapham Junction and Putney.

The council has invited all four Mayoral candidates to express their support for the measures which could be achieved in the first few months of their term of office.

Executive member for planning and transportation Guy Senior said:

"These are quick wins for the new Mayor.  While a lot of money has been spent on buses throughout London there are still a number of areas in our borough that are badly served.

"Roehampton has always suffered from being cut off while there is growing pressure from people in the Balham area for the 249 to be extended – or a brand new route started along Trinity Road.   People in south London rely on their buses. Because the tube network is so limited in south London, buses are more important than ever.

"Of all the transport investment we need it's on the buses where the new Mayor will have the most say. Whoever gets elected we want them to get on with the job of improving services for local people."

The council's bus proposals include:

  • A direct bus route along Trinity Road to Wandsworth Bridge and Fulham Broadway.
  • A new service between Balham and Wandsworth
  • Merging the 170 (Roehampton to Clapham Junction) and 239 (Clapham Junction to Victoria) to avoid the need for buses to turn round and stand at Clapham Junction.
  • Extending the bus stand at Falcon Lane to accommodate more than one bus.
  • Improving facilities at the Meyrick Arms bus stand to reduce congestion and improve the environment for pedestrians.
  • Improving services to hospitals, university and local estates.
  • Upgrading traffic signals in Putney High Street to make buses more reliable.
  • New service from Barnes Station along Priory Lane to Danebury Avenue..
  • New bus route serving Richmond Park.
  • Extending further bus routes into the grounds of St George's Hospital.
  • Extending the bus stand at the hospital, to reduce problems in Longmead Road.
  • New bus links from new riverside developments to major stations at Putney and Clapham Junction
