Hounslow Council has announced that UK charge point operator Zest will deliver a new network of rapid electric vehicle (EV) chargers across the borough. More than 100 rapid charging spaces have already been identified for installation, complementing the borough’s existing network.

The Zest contract is part of Hounslow’s ambitious plan to install over 2,000 new charge points, creating one of London’s most comprehensive EV networks. The rollout is fully funded by the charge point operators accelerating the borough’s transition to cleaner transport.

Each Zest charger will feature high-speed charging capability, contactless and app-based payment options, and 24/7 customer support. This focus on reliability and accessibility reflects Hounslow’s broader EV Charging Strategy, which emphasises convenience, affordability, and equitable access across the borough. Previous providers have experienced technical issues included one whose equipment turned out not to be rain proof.

Hounslow’s expansion comes against a backdrop of stark regional disparities in EV infrastructure. Recent studies show that London and the South dominate the UK’s charging provision, with boroughs like Westminster boasting more chargers than major northern cities combined. By committing to more than 2,000 charge points, Hounslow is positioning itself firmly within London’s charging “hotspot” cluster, helping to close the gap between boroughs with dense provision and those with patchier coverage.

Zest is not the only partner in Hounslow’s rollout. Earlier this year, the Council appointed Qwello to deliver a borough-wide network of fast AC chargers, offering up to 22kW charging for residential streets. Together, these contracts form a two-tiered approach with fast chargers for everyday use in residential areas and rapid chargers for en-route charging and businesses needing quick turnaround.

This layered network is designed to ensure that all residents are within a short walk of a charge point, a key objective of the borough’s EV Charging Strategy.

Residents will be invited to share their views on proposed rapid charging locations during an upcoming consultation. This follows technical and site surveys to ensure chargers are placed where they are most needed and least disruptive.

Councillor Katherine Dunne said, “Expanding our EV network is a key part of building a cleaner, greener borough. By working with industry partners, we’re ensuring residents have convenient, reliable and affordable options for charging close to home and across Hounslow.”
