The yellow junction box on the north side of Kew Bridge has recently surged into second place for the number of fines issued on TfL roads.
Data recently released by TfL shows that only the box outside the fire station on West Hill in Wandsworth issued more fines in the year up to March 2025.
The number of Penalty Charge Notices issued for the restriction at the junction of Chiswick High Road, Kew Road and Kew Bridge Road has not been released but in 2023 East India Dock Road featured second on the list with 9,735 tickets. That year there were 13,876 issued at West Hill.
The junction on the border of Brentford and Chiswick seems to have had surge relative to other locations as it didn’t appear in the top five for PCNs in 2023.
In 2022, TfL issued a total of 139,689 PCNs for yellow box junction contraventions across the city.
If you stop in a yellow box junction on a road managed by TfL you might receive a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) of £160. However, if you pay the fine within 14 days, the amount is reduced to £80.
Yellow box junctions are designed to keep key intersections clear and prevent congestion. You are only permitted to enter a yellow box if your exit is clear, allowing your vehicle to pass through without stopping. An exception is made when turning right and your path is blocked by oncoming traffic or other vehicles waiting to turn.

A spokesperson for TfL said, "Yellow box junctions play a vital role in keeping traffic in London moving and enforcement of the rules helps to reduce delays, protect access for emergency services, and keep people travelling safe.
"We enforce the rules at key locations along the red route based on safety and reliability risk.
"Penalty Charge Notices (PCN) deter drivers from breaking the rules and our aim is to achieve compliance road regulations. We do not simply issue PCNs to raise revenue, we enforce the rules to help keep the road safe and traffic moving."
