Hounslow Council to Switch to Virtual Parking Permits

From end of February applicants will not receive a paper permit

Existing permits will remain valid until expiry

February 18, 2025

Hounslow Council has announced that it is to stop issuing paper-based parking permits from the end this month.

As of Friday 28 February, residents and businesses will receive virtual permits for all new applications, renewals, and replacements.

The council says it has made the move to streamline the permit application and renewal process. Parking enforcement officers will verify permits using vehicle registration numbers, ensuring compliance without the need for physical permit displays.

This move forms part of the Council’s recently adopted Parking Strategy, which aims to modernise parking management, reduce vehicle emissions, and promote environmental sustainability.

There will be a two-year transition period during which a two-tier system will operate. Residents and businesses with existing paper-based permits will continue to use them until their natural expiry.

Visitor permits will continue to use the existing paper book system for the time being. Residents without internet access can apply for permits by phone. Permit charges will remain based on vehicle emissions, with no additional costs for virtual permits.

Councillor Shivraj Grewal, Hounslow Council’s Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, Recycling and Transformation, said, "As a Council, we are committed to enhancing the quality of life for all residents by implementing innovative solutions that promote sustainability and operational efficiency. The transition to virtual parking permits marks a significant step in our efforts to modernise services, with motorists no longer needing to display physical permits in their vehicles. This change also supports our broader goals of creating a healthier, greener, and more efficient borough."
