New Parking Charges Coming into Effect in Hounslow

New emissions-based rates will mean many drivers will pay more

Council says new fee structure will improve air quality in the borough

February 10, 2025

Hounslow Council is set to introduce a new pricing structure for parking in the borough which will see many motorists paying more.

The number of emissions bands is being increased from three to seven plus a diesel surcharge is being introduced. Charges for Band 4 (101-130 g/km) will correspond with current standard charges.

Parking charges are set according to a vehicle’s level of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions and how much motorist pay will depend on which band they are in. Some may find charges are reduced but it is expected that the majority will end up paying more. The council previously calculated that the new fee structures would bring in an extra £1.2million in revenue.

As of 28 February the bands will apply to resident and business parking permits, in addition to on- and off-street parking.

Hounslow Council New Emission Charge Bands

1- 0 g/km
2- 1 to 75 g/km
3- 76 to 100 g/km
4- 101 to 130 g/km
5- 131 to 170 g/km
6- 171 to 225 g/km
7- Over 226 g/km

At this stage, there are no changes planned for motorcycles. However, this will be subject to a separate consultation in the coming months.

Drivers will be able to see the emissions-based charges immediately when paying for parking through the PayByPhone system, contactless terminals, and PayPoint machines. They can also check their vehicle’s emissions to determine which charging ‘band’ their vehicles falls within by entering their vehicle registration number on the DVLA website.

The council voted to move forward with its new Parking Strategy last July

Councillor Shivraj Grewal, Hounslow Council’s Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, Recycling and Transformation, said, “Our ambition is to create a cleaner, greener, and healthier Hounslow for everyone, including future generations. Air quality in our borough is a big issue and we need to take bold action to tackle pollution.

“This initiative is a cornerstone to our plan to further encourage the use of cleaner vehicles and reduce pollution in the borough. By introducing lower fees for low-emission vehicles, we are helping residents make more sustainable choices while taking real action to tackle air pollution.”

This site remains committed to providing local community news and public interest journalism.

Articles such as the one above are integral to what we do. We aim to feature as much as possible on local societies, charities based in the area, fundraising efforts by residents, community-based initiatives and even helping people find missing pets.

We've always done that and won't be changing, in fact we'd like to do more.

However, the readership that these stories generates is often below that needed to cover the cost of producing them. Our financial resources are limited and the local media environment is intensely competitive so there is a constraint on what we can do.
