Hounslow Council has reached a major milestone in its first-ever Green Investment campaign, raising £1 million to fund a suite of local environmental projects. The initiative, launched earlier this year in partnership with ethical finance platform Abundance Investment, allows residents, businesses, and community groups to invest directly in climate-focused improvements across the borough—with contributions starting from just £5.
The campaign forms part of Hounslow’s broader strategy to tackle climate change and build resilience at the neighbourhood level. According to the council, the funds will now be used to deliver a range of projects including:
Councillor Katherine Dunne, Cabinet Member for Climate, Environment and Transport, welcomed the milestone saying, “Reaching this target shows that our residents care deeply about taking meaningful action on climate change and investing in the future of their community. This is just the beginning—we’ll be announcing more opportunities to invest very soon.”
The campaign is structured as a Community Municipal Investment (CMI), offering investors a fixed interest rate of 4.1% paid every six months. The first tranche was capped at £1 million and open for three months. Te council also introduced an incentive in May 2025 whereby for every £1 invested by residents, an additional 50p would be contributed to support green projects.
Projects earmarked for funding include the “Clear Air for Schools” initiative, which combines air quality interventions with active travel and energy efficiency upgrades. The Hounslow Community Energy Fund is also set to benefit, supporting the installation of solar panels, heat pumps, and LED lighting in community spaces.
The council aims to raise a total of £5 million over the next five years, following the example of other local authorities such as Hammersmith & Fulham, which has raised over £2.5 million through similar schemes.
While the investment offers a modest financial return, the council emphasises its primary value lies in enabling residents to play an active role in local climate action. Future rounds of investment are expected to be announced in the coming months.
