Big screens in the borough will be showing the Coronation
May 5, 2023
There are parties, funfairs, live music and celebratory afternoon teas planned across the borough this weekend to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III and Camilla.
Here’s where to join the fun and make the most of this historic occasion.
At Westfield in Shepherd’s Bush, the party has already started with a traditional fairground on Westfield Square open until June 4, from 11am till 4pm daily, including a Carousel and Hook a Duck challenge. This weekend there will also be free arts and crafts and face painting, while the Coronation ceremony will be shown live on a giant screen from 11am on Saturday.
Inside the shopping centre, Hamleys has lots more fun for kids while a range of restaurants are offering special Coronation themed dishes such as ‘Kroningskage’ (‘Coronation cake’ in Danish) at Ole & Steen, Pimm’s served with Chorizo Sausage Rolls a Salt Yard, His Majesty's muffin, British Berries & Cream at SOHO Coffee and Strawberries & Cream Falooda at Bindas Eatery. Saturday, May 6 is of course the day of the ceremony itself, and it will be live on big screens at locations across the borough. In Hammersmith, all eyes will be on the giant screen in Lyric Square, the centre of the King Street Coronation Party which will also include a day market, running from 11am to 6pm and offering over 100 stalls. There will also be a Mad Hatters tea party and a crown making workshop, as well as live music, dancing and street entertainment.
In Fulham, Sands End Arts & Community Centre is hosting a special Coronation event in the Walnut Tree Cafe with royal events on screen all day, from 8.30am till 5pm, and a free afternoon tea with homemade scones on offer from 2pm till 4pm. Everyone is welcome and you can find out more here.
Over 40 streets across H&F will be holding their own parties. If you want to join one near you, here is a map showing all the locations.
Churches around the borough are also hosting celebrations, including Fulham Broadway Methodist Church, which will be screening the royal event in its community cafe. There will be a free BBQ and salads from 1pm till 3pm, a kids play area with free crafts and a singalong session with DJ Alan.
All Saints Fulham will also be showing the ceremony on a big screen within the church which will be open to visitors from 10.15am. Then on Sunday May 7 at 12pm there will be a Big Garden Lunch at All Saints Church Hall in Fulham High Street, with family entertainment including a kids’ Kings and Queens costume competition and a truly British cake contest in the tea tent.
