The man accused of killing Wayne Broadhurst, who was an employee of Greener Ealing, has admitted stabbing two people during a violent incident in Uxbridge. However, 23-year-old Afghan migrant, Safi Dawood, has not yet entered a plea in relation to the fatal attack on the council worker who died at the scene.
The accused appeared via videolink at Southwark Crown Court on Monday, where he pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent against his landlord, 45-year-old Shahzad Farrukh, and admitted actual bodily harm in relation to a 14-year-old boy. Both were injured during the incident in Midhurst Gardens on 27 October.
Dawood also pleaded guilty to possessing an offensive weapon. He denied two counts of attempted murder, which had been brought as alternative charges. No plea was taken regarding the death of 49-year-old Wayne Broadhurst, who was attacked while walking his dog and died from multiple stab wounds. According to Sky News members of Mr Broadhurst’s family sat quietly in court as the charges were read.
Dawood had been living as a lodger with Mr Farrukh at an address in Midhurst Gardens. A previous hearing was told that he allegedly approached a neighbour with a knife in his hand while members of her family tried to help the injured Mr Farrukh and the teenage boy, who suffered cuts to his hands. One neighbour reportedly swung her walking stick at Dawood, causing him to retreat.
Emergency services were called shortly after 5pm. Mr Broadhurst, who was not known to Dawood and had been walking his dog, was pronounced dead at the scene. Mr Farrukh remains in hospital with life-changing injuries, while the teenager has since been discharged.
Mr Broadhurst was an employee of Greener Ealing Ltd, the council-owned waste and recycling contractor. He had worked full-time for the organisation since 2019 and was described by colleagues as “a well-respected and dedicated member of our team who made a real contribution to the work we do and to the residents we serve.”
His family said he was “a devoted and hardworking man who spent his life serving his community,” adding that his love of animals and his passion for Liverpool FC reflected “the gentle heart behind his strong work ethic.”
On the Tuesday evening following the attack, around 100 residents gathered near the scene for a candlelit vigil. Flowers were laid in tribute to a man many described as quietly generous, committed to his work, and deeply rooted in the local community.
Dawood, of Midhurst Gardens who entered the UK without authorisation in a lorry, was initially charged with murder, two counts of attempted murder, and possession of an offensive weapon. He was remanded in custody after an earlier appearance at Westminster Magistrates’ Court and will return to the Crown Court for further hearings relating to the outstanding murder charge.
The case continues.
