Families across west London will benefit from enhanced neonatal services closer to home after the neonatal unit at West Middlesex University Hospital was redesignated as a Level 2 Local Neonatal Unit (LNU).

Previously operating as a Level 1 Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU), the upgraded service can now provide care for babies born at lower gestations and with lower birthweights, as well as infants requiring high-dependency and short-term intensive care.

The change marks a significant milestone for the hospital and is expected to reduce the need for newborns to be transferred to other hospitals for specialist treatment. By keeping more families together during what can be an anxious and challenging period, the move will also improve continuity of care and support parental involvement in their baby's treatment and recovery.

Hospital leaders said the redesignation strengthens the neonatal and maternity pathway at West Middlesex and reflects years of dedication and collaboration from staff across the service.

Claire Davidson, Interim Director of Midwifery, said the upgrade represented a major step forward for local healthcare services. She said it would enable the hospital to provide a higher level of care for babies requiring additional support, including short-term intensive care, feeding assistance and non-invasive ventilation. She added that reducing the need for transfers would allow parents to remain closer to their babies and each other, helping improve the experience of families during their neonatal journey.

The redesignation to Level 2 status means more vulnerable newborns can now access specialist treatment locally, providing reassurance for families while easing pressure on neonatal services elsewhere in the region.
