Council praises record year for schools

following GCSE resukts for 2005

Wandsworth schools notched up a record five point rise in GCSE results in last summer's examinations.

The final figures published today by the Department for Education and Skills shows that the proportion of pupils achieving five or more passes at grades A-C rose in the last twelve months from 49.1 per cent to 54.1 per cent.

This year's achievements have helped local schools to climb into third place overall among the inner London boroughs.

Cllr Malcolm Grimston Wandsworth London Cabinet member for education Malcolm Grimston said:

This year's five point rise in higher grade passes is a substantial improvement and continues the excellent progress our schools have been making.

"Wandsworth schools are returning some excellent results with only two inner London boroughs scoring more highly. It is great news for parents to be able to choose from such a wide range of good schools.

The overall picture is immensely encouraging with our best schools continuing to achieve excellent results and others showing the benefit of working closely with the education authority to identify areas for improvement and raise standards.
