The Arts Society Chiswick will host a public lecture titled The Men Who Made Menswear on Thursday 12 November at POSK. The talk will be delivered by London Blue Badge Tourist Guide and art historian Russell Nash, who will explore two centuries of men’s tailoring and the figures who shaped modern menswear.

The lecture examines the evolution of the male silhouette through the work of tailors, shirtmakers, hatters and other craftspeople, alongside the individuals who popularised their designs. Among those featured are Beau Brummell, the Duke of Windsor, Tommy Nutter, Montague Burton, Alexander McQueen and John Stephen. Nash will also discuss the development of London’s tailoring districts, including Savile Row and Jermyn Street, and their influence on global fashion from the early 19th century to the present day.

Russell Nash is an accredited Blue Badge Guide with experience at major London museums, including the National Gallery and the British Museum. Before becoming a guide, he worked for 15 years as an actor and theatre maker.

Alison Watson, Chair of The Arts Society Chiswick, said the history of menswear reveals “rebellion, precision, and identity,” noting that London’s tailoring traditions continue to shape contemporary style.

The event is being presented as the Society’s annual Taster Talk, with guest fees waived for November. Doors and the private bar will open at 7pm, with the lecture beginning at 8pm.
