The Arts Society Chiswick is inviting you to take a closer look at one of the most influential figures in modern art when Alan Read presents a talk entitled Puzzling Picasso on Thursday 8 October.

The talk will examine ten paintings by Pablo Picasso, using them to explore his life and the evolution of his artistic styles during a career spanning more than 70 years. Alan Read will consider the origins of the works, their biographical and historical context and their significance within modern art.

Among the works featured will be Picasso’s The Three Dancers from 1925, which was the subject of the Theatre Picasso exhibition at Tate Modern. Alan Read holds master’s and first-class honours degrees in History of Art from Birkbeck College, University of London. He is a gallery guide at Tate Britain and regularly lectures at Tate Britain and Tate Modern. He previously spent 20 years as a gallery guide and lecturer at the National Portrait Gallery and Dulwich Picture Gallery and is also a qualified London Blue Badge Guide. Alison Watson, Chair of The Arts Society Chiswick, described it as a “fascinating talk” exploring Picasso’s life and career through ten key paintings.

Puzzling Picasso takes place at POSK, the Polish Social and Cultural Association, 238-246 King Street, Hammersmith, W6 0RF. Doors and the private bar open at 7pm, with the talk beginning at 8pm. Guests are welcome and admission is £15 on the door. Anyone who decides to join The Arts Society Chiswick on the night can have the admission charge deducted from their annual subscription.

Membership of the Arts Society Chiswick includes ten expert lectures on the second Thursday of every month (except August and December) and the opportunity to participate in tours, visits, social events and Special Interest Days. For more information see the society's web site.

The Arts Society Chiswick brings people together through a shared curiosity for the arts, to create opportunities for everyone to be part of a diverse community in which they can enjoy, learn about, participate in, and preserve the Arts and Cultural Heritage.
