Winning The battle For Cleaner Buses In Putney High Street

Agreement hammered out with TfL will leave 49 old buses in service

London Assembly Member for Wandsworth Richard Tracey, together with Putney councillors, Wandsworth Council leaders and officers, and the Putney Society, believe they are winning the campaign to cut pollution by getting cleaner buses on Putney High Street.
 
Following a recent meeting with TfL Buses chiefs and GLA environmental officers, involving all the local campaigners, agreement has been hammered out that will see out of the 230 total number of buses in service on Putney High Street:
* 50 already meet Euro 4 or 5 standard 
* 46 will be replaced with new models from October 2012 (with hybrids included within this number)
* 85 will be retrofitted from 2012 to 2014.

Leaving just 49 old buses (but not the oldest of the current fleet) remaining in service on the High Street.

Richard Tracey says
" We pledged to keep pressing TfL Buses to clean up the fleet operating along the High Street on the various routes - and now we think this is a break through. The TfL Buses chiefs have accepted the results of the highly professional monitoring which is done continuously by Wandsworth Council environmental officers, and the right steps are now being taken to cut the NOx pollution which is most damaging, particularly to those with respiratory problems and young children, but frankly to all of us. This has been a very well conducted campaign by all the various local interests and I am glad that positive results are being seen. Nevertheless we shall not let up."
