You are invited to their barbeque at site overlooking the Thames
Young volunteers serving up burgers and hot dogs at a previous Boat Race event
March 23, 2023
This year as usual the 5th Putney Sea Scout Group will be holding a barbeque on the day of the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race (Sunday 26 March).
The scout hut is an ideal spot to view the proceedings and, consequently, this event is very popular and the main fundraising opportunity for the group in the year. It has allowed it to survive as one of the last remaining scout groups in Putney
Viewers heading to Putney Embankment for the are encouraged to join the community celebration at the Scout hut, next to the towpath near the Beverley Brook footbridge.
Volunteers and young people from 5th Putney Sea Scout Group will be cooking up burgers and hot dogs in their garden overlooking the Thames. Vegetarian options will be on offer, along with a licensed bar, hot drinks and a cake stall.
Guests can also buy tickets for the community raffle, featuring prizes and vouchers donated by local businesses.
Everyone is welcome at the Sea Scouts' fundraiser
Onlookers who want to follow the action can see the women’s and men’s races go past before moving into the Scout hut to watch the live TV broadcast on the big screen.
The barbecue will run from 12pm to 5pm and all funds raised will go towards essential repairs to the Scout hut, helping to secure it for future generations of Scouts, Cubs and Beavers. Last year’s event raised a significant amount towards a replacement roof, with major work completed over the summer. But there is still work to be done to replace the water-damaged inside ceiling.
Chris Hayes, Scouter-in-Charge at 5th Putney Sea Scout Group, said, “There’s always a fantastic buzz on Boat Race Day, when all are welcome to join us at the Scout hut. It’s a brilliant way to enjoy a drink and a burger in the heart of the action, while showing how much you care about opportunities for young people in our community.”
