The Putney Choral Society
September 2, 2025
Putney Choral Society will host an open rehearsal offering members an opportunity to observe or participate in the choir’s early preparations for its winter concert, which will feature Martin Palmeri’s Misatango and Alessandro Scarlatti’s Magnificat.
This session takes place on Monday 22 September from 7:15pm to 9:15pm at Putney High Junior School, Lytton Grove, SW15.
Scores will be provided, and no prior experience with the works is required.
The rehearsal will focus on selected sections of both compositions. Misatango, also known as Misa a Buenos Aires, is a contemporary mass setting that blends traditional liturgical structure with tango rhythms, written for chorus and soprano soloist. Scarlatti’s Magnificat, by contrast, is a Baroque choral work that reflects the composer’s sacred music legacy.
Founded in 1951, Putney Choral Society is one of southwest London’s longest-established amateur choirs. It has a history of performing a wide repertoire—from Renaissance polyphony to modern choral compositions—and regularly collaborates with professional soloists and orchestras. The choir rehearses weekly and presents two major concerts each year, often at venues such as St Paul’s Church in Southfields and All Saints’ Church in Putney.
The society has long maintained an open-door policy for prospective members, welcoming singers of varying experience levels. Attendees at the open rehearsal may take part informally and are invited to attend up to three sessions before deciding whether to join. The winter concert is scheduled for Saturday 6 December at St Paul’s Church, Augustus Road, SW19.
