ISSUE: Garden centre flats turned down but Garden Centre will still close

The council has turned down a proposal to build 14 flats on a garden centre site at 1 Dryburgh Road, however the Centre will still close its gates on 16th August as owner Fairdare Ltd has refused to grant the Adrian Hall Garden Centre a new lease from March because it still wants to build houses or flats on the site.

Fairdare Ltd has made an appeal to the Secretary of State for Transport, Local Government & the Regions against the Councils decision to refuse permission.

The ongoing saga started after the original owner, Wandsworth Council, granted itself planning permission to build five houses or 10 flats on the Dryburgh Road site in December 2000. It then sold the land the following April to Fairdare for £1.6million. Adrian Hall Ltd offered to buy the land but fell well short of independent valuation of the site. As a result, the council decided it would cantina with the sale to Fairdare Ltd.

The Secretary of State has decided to hold a public inquiry on 19 November 2002 at 10.00am at the Wandsworth Town Hall.

If you wish to attend the inquiry you should notify the Planning Inspectorate, if you are unable to attend you may submit your views in writing. You must quote ref APP/H5960/A/02/1092303 and send your letter to:

The Planning Inspectorate,
3/08b Kite Wing,
Temple Quay House,
2 The Square,
Temple Quay,
Bristol BS1 6PN.

You must ensure that 3 copies of your representation is received by 20 August 2002 - copies will be forwarded to both the Council and Fairdale Ltd.

Gardeners in Putney will now have to travel by car to Sheen to reach the nearest Garden Centre or alternatively go over Putney Bridge into Fulham.
