Cycling on the A4
I have noted what is potentially an interesting increase in the numbers of people, including myself, cycling along the A4 corridor through Chiswick in recent weeks. I have observed what is probably a mix of commuters, locals and family groups, including box cycles for children. And why not, the route is segregated and very safe and with few interruptions to flow and there are several points for safe and convenient local road access into the centre of Chiswick, a few minutes ride away? Perhaps comparisons and choices are now being made and the poorly designed cycle lane along Chiswick High Road, with its numerous interuptions to flow, conflicts and poor safety record, is being avoided. In 2019 both Tfl and LB Hounslow discounted the use of the A4 corridor without any proper consideration of design alternatives, such was the determination at that time that a route along the High Road was the only option.
