Lampton Leisure has pledged improvements at New Chiswick Pool following months of complaints from swimmers about unreliable maintenance, inconsistent water temperatures and a lack of clear communication about timetable changes.

Regular users say problems have ranged from cold showers to unexpectedly warm pool temperatures, with little warning provided beyond occasional notices at reception. One swimmer described the situation bluntly, saying the centre appeared “incapable of communicating with customers on maintenance issues or timetable changes”, noting that cold‑shower warnings were posted only on A4 sheets and that “ironically the showers are now hot”.

A trial aqua swim session introduced on Tuesday mornings in August became a particular flashpoint. Swimmers reported that no advance notice was given, and that the Lampton Leisure app did not show the session on the timetable. One long‑standing user, who has swum every Tuesday for 20 years, said she had no idea the trial was taking place. Another swimmer, frustrated by repeated maintenance issues, has cancelled her membership.

Concerns have also been raised about pool temperatures during the summer heatwaves. A report submitted to the Health and Safety Executive on 14 September detailed temperatures reaching 34°C, with swimmers experiencing 31–32°C on several occasions. Earlier in the year, the pool temperature reportedly dropped to 17°C. The user who filed the report said the heat left swimmers feeling lethargic and criticised the lack of notifications through the app or email.

The report also highlighted ventilation problems during hot weather, with lifeguards rotated every 20 minutes because the pool hall had become too warm for sustained concentration.

Some improvements have been made over time, including new shower heads and the introduction of radar keys, following contact with Lampton Leisure’s managing director Rowland Omamor and New Chiswick Pool manager Harvey Choules. But swimmers say communication remains inconsistent and that changes are often discovered only on arrival.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Lampton Leisure acknowledged the recent issues. “We would like to apologise to customers affected by the recent issues at New Chiswick Pool. Working with Hounslow Council and specialist contractors, the issues with the showers and pool have been temporarily resolved while we continue to work toward a permanent solution. The timetables are now also up to date after an outage from a third‑party supplier.

“We will continue to work closely with Hounslow Council to make improvements to New Chiswick Pool.”

For now, regular swimmers say they hope the promised improvements will bring greater stability — and clearer communication — to a pool that many have used for decades.
