Chiswick to get Christmas Lights
Councillor reveals decorations will appear in the main shopping areas this year
Chiswick finally looks set to have a properly festive tone this year at Christmas. After years of the High Road being one of the few London main streets not to have decorations, Chiswick Councillors are confident that this Yuletide will be a well lit one.
Cllr Robert Oulds, who represents Homefields ward, told the ChiswickW4.com forum, "My colleagues, the Chiswick Councillors, and I have already set the wheels in motion. There will be Christmas lights on Chiswick High Road this year."
At a recent
area committee meeting it was estimated that the initial costs of the
lighting would be in excess of £12,000. Subsequent annual maintenance,
electricity and erection would cost around £7,000. Funding, in part,
would from the CAC’s capital budget, with the remainder being raised by
local traders. There has been some scepticism expressed that local businesses
would be willing to provide the necessary funds.
Previously Chiswick had been labelled "Scrooge
City" in Fortune Magazine for the absence of Christmas lights
and residents allegedly sniffy reaction to an ex-patriate American's plastic
novelty light display.
