A much-loved heron known to residents along the Thames at Hammersmith was rescued last Sunday morning (19 July) after being spotted injured and struggling against the rising tide near London Corinthians Sailing Club.

Sandra, who first noticed the bird perched on a branch during high tide around 7:40 am, said she was surprised to see it taking refuge. “Odd, I thought, ” she recalled. “Later, while I was on the terrace, I noticed an injured heron hobbling along. The tide was coming in so fast. ”

Grey herons are known for their loyalty to particular stretches of river, often spending years fishing in the same area. Locals had come to recognize this individual, affectionately nicknamed Buddy the Heron, as a long-term resident.

Sandra and her neighbour Sheila quickly began calling rescue teams, fearing the bird would be swept away. After several hours, they reached Swans & Friends Bird Rescue, based in Shepperton. Rescuer Dan arrived in the charity’s ambulance equipped with a net and ladder, and successfully retrieved Buddy for treatment near the Old Ship pub.

By Monday, Sandra had checked in on the heron’s progress. “He’s on painkillers, though he wasn’t eating,” she said. “We miss his elegant sight fishing all day on the riverbanks. Our heartfelt gratitude to Dan and the team looking after our resident heron.”

The rescue was supported by local residents Sandra, Sheila, Janey, and Danny, who expressed their thanks to the Swans & Friends Bird Rescue team for their swift response.
