A motor vessel skipper has been fined after an incident on the River Thames that left two rowers injured, including a Chiswick woman who suffered a broken knee.

At Thames Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 5 May, Adam Khan, master of the motor vessel Shamrock, pleaded guilty to offences arising from the incident, which took place near Mortlake and Quintin Boat Club near Chiswick Bridge on 6 October 2025.

The court heard that Mr Khan was navigating on a strong flood tide when he generated excessive wash, swamping a double scull that was stationary at the water’s edge. The force of the wash capsized the small craft, throwing both rowers into the water and causing significant injuries.

One of the rowers, a woman from Chiswick, sustained a broken knee, an injury that has left her unable to row for at least six months. Further legal action connected to the case is understood to be pending.

Mr Khan admitted navigating without due care and attention and in a manner liable to injure or endanger other river users. He was fined £440, ordered to pay a £180 surcharge, and £250 in costs.

PLA Chief Harbour Master James Stride said the case highlighted the responsibilities of all who operate vessels on the tidal Thames.

“This incident resulted in people being injured and was avoidable,” he said. “If you are in charge of a boat on the Thames, you have a responsibility to operate with due care and attention, taking account of other river users.

“The tidal Thames is a shared waterway, used by commercial operators, rowers, and recreational users alike. Excessive wash can present a serious risk, particularly to small craft and those close to the water’s edge.

“We will continue to take enforcement action where standards of navigation fall below those required, as we work to keep people safe on the river.”
