An Enjoyable Week Attending Events in the Constituency

I attended lots of events in the constituency last weekend and thoroughly enjoyed them all. I went along to the Grove Park Group late summer party, where in addition to good food, music, and fun for the kids, there was also training in CPR. It was a really successful event with over a hundred attendees.
I joined St Michael’s Elmwood Road Street Party where there was more good food, music and lots of things for the kids to get involved with.
The Chiswick Book Festival, directed by Torin Douglas, was busier than ever, even with events at St Michael and All Angels attracting up to 200 people. I particularly enjoyed Lord Alf Dubs talking about his autobiography which begins with his escape from the Nazis on the Kindertransport.
I rounded off the weekend with prizegiving at Chiswick Horticultural and Allotments Society and came away with a bagful of excellent fruit and veg bought in the auction!
Amongst all the events, I managed to fit in some canvassing for the Holborn and St Pancras by-election, along with fellow west London MPs Ben Coleman and Rupa Huq. It was an amazing turnout with over 500 people coming out to support excellent Labour candidate and leader of Camden Council, Sagal Abdi-Wali following the launch of her campaign.

On Thursday I was also very pleased to make it along to the Hammersmith and Fulham Business Awards, held in the new Civic Campus. The awards provide an opportunity for local businesses to raise their profile and gain recognition for their success. It was great to catch up with Mayor of H&F Sharon Holder and Aniza Meghani who runs Classic Textiles in Goldhawk Road, a mainstay of its famous fabric district for decades.

On the parliamentary front, we are now back in recess after two very busy weeks. There was a vote on the Assisted Dying Bill, which I supported but was narrowly lost, a long overdue reset on UK attitude to the ongoing occupation of Palestine led by Foreign Secretary, Ed Miliband, and a promise to resolve the issue of indefinite sentences where people have been held in prison for decades beyond expected release date.
We are now in conference season and over the next few weeks, the major parties will be holding their yearly conference, with Labour Party Conference taking place from 27th-30th September. Parliament sits again on 12th October.
