A man has been arrested after a car smashed through the level crossing barriers on Churchfield Road in Acton and overturned directly outside Acton Central station, in a dramatic incident captured on video.
The footage posted by @UB1UB2 shows the vehicle stationary on the east side of the lowered barriers before suddenly pushing through them. Within seconds, the car flips onto its roof, skidding across the crossing and coming to rest beside the station entrance.
Part of the barrier was torn off and dragged several metres along the road. A woman standing nearby was struck by flying debris and is seen lying on the pavement in the aftermath. Witnesses can be heard shouting for people to get off the tracks in case a train approached.
British Transport Police says it received a call about the incident at around 10.30pm on Monday 28 September. Officers arrived to find the car overturned after forcing its way through the level crossing. The driver was taken to hospital and initially arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving. He was later further arrested on suspicion of drink driving, criminal damage and endangering the safety of the railway. He has not yet been charged, and enquiries are continuing.
