Campaigners Continue To Protest Over Conversion Work On Merton Hall

Historic tiles are being destroyed as controversial renovation work goes on

More than 4,000 people have signed a petition calling on Merton Council stop controversial redevelopment work on Merton Hall in South Wimbledon.

Work began last month to convert the historic building in Kingston Road so it can be used by the Elim Church. In return the church will free up their existing building in High Path to help enable a new Harris Academy free school to be built on the site.

Earlier this week developers put up lighting around the boards surrounding Merton Hall, which have been repeatedly targeted with graffiti condemning the work.

Today (April 18) the developers began removing the 19th century roof tiles from the building, which were thrown to the ground and destroyed, rather than being salvaged.

Dundonald ward Councillor David Dean (@daviddean) tweeted today that the response from the council about the loss of the tiles was that they were "not of sufficient value to merit keeping".

Campaigners fighting against the re-development have asked the Local Government Ombudsman to investigate the council's landswap deal with the Elim Church and it's understood a decision on a potential investigation will be made soon.
