Is Humanism a Religion

Monthly Meetings with the West London Humanists and Secularists

Thursday 15th October 2015: “Are Humanists a different tribe?"- Matthew Engelke

Starts 7.15pm for 7:30, end 9.30pm at Friend's Meeting House, Woodville Road, Ealing

Is Humanism in many respects like a different religion? At least, when described in the objective language of anthropology, do we share similar behavioural characteristics in relation to our respective world-views? And does it matter if we do? Our speaker this month, Matthew Engelke, is a professor of anthropology at LSE who spent 2011 doing “field work” observing the BHA and, in particular, a local branch near us. (He even attended one of our Ethical Jury meetings). We have invited him to present his findings and see if we recognize his account – which might be entertaining, but should also illuminate the question of which similarities and differences actually matter.

November meetings:

Social at Crispin's, Ealing High Street/Ealing Green, Thursday November 5th at 7:30.

Discussion on "Genetic modification of human embryos", Thursday November 19th, 7:15 for 7:30 at Friends Meeting House
