Beyond The Gates At Cannizaro

New book tells full story of fascinating history behind Cannizaro House and Park

A new book telling the full story of the fascinating history behind Cannizaro House and Park will be on sale by the end of April.

“Cannizaro Beyond the Gates”, being published by Wimbledon Society Museum Press, reveals the background behind the Duke and Duchess of Cannizzaro and what happened to their home in Wimbledon.

As well as the Duke and Duchess, who used the house as their country retreat in the 19th century, Cannizaro had many fascinating occupants - from 18th century art collectors to politicians and Victorian hostesses.

The book also tells the history of the development of the gardens, which at one stage were compared with Kew Gardens, but also fell into neglect at various times.

And also included is the full story of the annual Cannizaro Park Festival with all its ups and downs - a troubled yet triumphant story of music within the grounds dating back to the Cannizzaros themselves.

Last year’s festival was actually cancelled, due to the economic circumstances. But it returns in 2010 and runs from July 2-17, featuring a variety of rock and pop acts, tribute bands, jazz evenings and comedy.

The book is written by Tony Matthews, one of the founders of the Friends of Cannizaro Park in 1996 and Chairman from 2004-7. It costs £7.99 and can be reserved from the Museum of Wimbledon, Ridgeway, Wimbledon or by emailing info@aappl.com
