Do you remember any former pupils from the old Wandsworth School?

Local people are being urged to help remember former pupils of the old Wandsworth School - now the site of St Cecilia's School and Arcadian Place - who sacrified their lives for their country.

The Old Wandsworthians Memorial Trust is looking to replace the original memorial plaques that were lost when the school was demolished in the 1990s. It wants to hear from any relatives, friends and neighbours who can provide information on former pupils who lost their lives in either World War.

The Trust has strong links with St Cecilia’s in Southfields and aims to replace the memorial plaques on the school site in honour of all the young men who lost their lives in the two wars.

It has copies of the wording of the original World War II plaque and the names of 54 former pupils, but has been unable to get any details for the plaque honouring the 98 pupils lost in the Great War. Once it has the new plaques a memorial service will be held on the former site of Wandsworth School early next year.

The council has launched a four-year programme of commemorating the First World War, including the official unveiling of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission interpretation board and participation in the Lights Out event.

Other events include an inauguration of the Victoria Cross/George Cross Memorial Garden at Wandsworth Town Hall, a dedicated twitter feed and blog and The St Anne's Church Memorial Project to research some, if not all, 313 names on the church's war memorial.

The borough’s Heritage Service is also urging people to donate photographs, newspaper cuttings or other documents relating to the First World War. Email heritage@gll.org.
