First Ever 3D Modelling Competition Takes Place in Wandsworth
South Thames College hosts Speed Modelling Competition
This week South Thames College hosts a Speed Modelling Competition as part of the World Skills UK competition series. World Skills UK currently organise a number of skills competitions in a range of areas including Hairdressing, Popular Music and Robotics but this challenge will be the first for the computer gaming industry.
The competition was developed by a panel of London Colleges and experts in the field. Students competing will be given an allocated time to create a 3D computer generated model in one of South Thames College’s brand new computer suites.
Games Development Lecturer Mike Spence from South Thames College said:
“We’ve been keen to run a competition with World Skills for a while so we took the initiative to get one going. South Thames College is an ideal venue to host the competition because we have state of the art learning facilities and specialist computer aided design technology to give young people exceptional skills in this area.”
Judges will include experts Charles Burt, from Colossal Games and Darren White, the Lead Visual Artist on Need for Speed the top racing game, who works at Slightly Mad Studios; a multi award winning independent British video game company.
This is hopefully the first of many competitions with plans for concept art and level design rounds next year. Prizes will include World Skills UK medals and exposure in the industry plus a great achievement for students to add to their CV. South Thames alumni student Russ Kentish who now works for Colossal Games said:
“Studying at South Thames College helped me to get a job because I had some work from College I could use in my portfolio. Current employers are still impressed by the work I did at College.”
Charles Burt from Colossal Games said:
“South Thames College provides their students with the essential building blocks needed to start a career in the games industry or to further their education at University. Russell Kentish is a prime example of this, having already worked for Colossal Games and now moving onto University, after participating as a student of South Thames College.”
Colleges competing for the Gold medals include South Thames College, Carlshalton College and the College of Haringey and North East London.
